The arched shape of the space he was in came into view, then even rows of plush seats, in one of them, a man with a powerful gun. And a tattoo, a weretiger, spanning his chest. The seat next to him released a puff of air, and a familiar face leaned toward his.

“I hated doing that, but couldn’t have you rescue the girl.”

Delilah. She’d shot Delilah, and now he was on a plane to nowhere. Kaos’s stomach cramped.

Lily curved one hand over his arm. She ran her fingers upward, sliding them clawlike beneath his sleeve. “In any case, it’s done, and you’re mine again.”

He wanted to mourn Delilah, but knew he’d do better to leave it alone. He was in very real danger that he probably wouldn’t escape. He might prevent harm to others if he stayed focused though.

“I was never yours.”

Not deep inside. He’d gotten sucked up by her presence, the aura of power she wore. She was apparently thinking the same thing.

“Do you remember The Harbinger Club?”

Kaos nodded. Where they’d met.

“You melted a pound of cheese on your chest, and I generously offered to remove it for you. That was the first time we ...” She held up two fingers, twisted together.

Kaos shut his eyes. “I was high on adrenalin.”

“You were amazing.”

“Funny ...” He flipped his lids open again. “If you thought so, then why’d I catch you with ... what was his name? Senator somebody ...?”

“Mmm. Senator Deveraux. That was a political thing. I came back to you.”

Flicking her fingers, her nails nipped his skin.

“There was never anything worth hanging onto with me and you,” he said, ignoring the discomfort. “Where it mattered, we were nonexistent, and now, I’m as good as dead.”

“Oh, come now. That’s so fatalistic,” she replied. “Though, I admit, when this is over, you’ll be exactly that, and I regret it already. But business is business and ...”

“And your pocketbook is more important than people’s lives.”

Lily formed her lips into a pucker. “Some people always have to die so that others might live. Isn’t that why we honor those who die in combat? Weren’t they expendable?”

“Brave. They were brave.” And he was not. He should have told Delilah what was required. That’d been his biggest reason for not marrying her on the spot. He knew, based on his brothers’ lives, what she’d have to do, but hadn’t found the strength to admit it.

“Ah ...” Lily purred. “I see your guilt. What is it over, the girl? You never told her that her sole existence was as your baby factory? Think of her face ... the horror, that this strong ...” Her hand strayed across his chest. “... sexy man values her only for her womb.”

“She has more value than that.” That was Lily’s view of it ... and probably, in part, his mother’s ... but not his. Nevertheless, though he said the words and meant them, a lot of doubt hung in his voice. Doubt, Lily fed on.

“I have saved you,” Lily continued. “I prevented your ever having to say it and am going to give you a chance to do something big.
